Three people escaped from a fire that eventually destroyed two homes
and damaged a third on the Corolla oceanfront early Saturday morning.
Firefighters were called to the 800 block of Lighthouse Drive at 4:50 a.m.
One person suffered minor injuries from burning embers while escaping
from one of the houses and was treated by EMS at the scene. No one was
in the other house as the fire spread.
Firefighters became concerned the flames could quickly spread even
farther in the densely packed subdivision as onshore winds started
getting stronger just before sunrise. Several homes nearby were
evacuated for about an hour.
Crews from departments in Currituck and Dare counties declared the blaze under control by 11 a.m.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
One firefighter had to be hospitalized for a medical issue suffered at the scene.
Currituck Fire and EMS chief Chip Melton said they were transported
to Outer Banks Hospital and then transferred to Sentara Norfolk General
Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.
